MANILA, Philippines – University of the East (UE) remains the gold standard when it comes to fencing in the UAAP.
They captured a sixth straight men's title, and achieved an unprecedented 11-peat in the women's division on Sunday in the UAAP Season 80 fencing tournament at the PSC Fencing Hall inside the Philsports Complex.
With Season 80 MVP Sammuel Tranquilan leading the charge, UE collected four golds, three silvers, and a bronze to beat University of Santo Tomas (UST).
UST finished with a 2-3-2 medal haul and settled for second place for the fifth season in a row.
Season 80 MVP Wilhelmina Lozada led UE with five golds and two silvers, as the Lady Warriors nearly swept the tournament.
University of the Philippines was the only other team to win gold in the women's division, as their sabre team secured the top spot. They also won a silver and a couple of bronzes to settle for runner-up honors.
The Junior Warriors also stamped their class, as the boys' team claimed an eight-peat, while the girls' squad emerged triumphant for the seventh straight year.
For the second straight year, Prince John Francis Felipe and Samantha Catantan won the boys and girls division MVP, respectively.
