South Carolina man shoots teenage cousin for eating his bag of potato chips—police

A man from Colleton County, South Carolina, shot his teenage cousin after he warned him not to eat his salt and pepper potato chips.

The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office said on Wednesday that 19-year-old Ryan Dean Langdale turned himself in after he admitted to the crime, which happened on Sept. 29, reports The Post and Courier.

Langdale was reported to have said, “Do not touch my chips, or I’ll shoot you,” according to the 17-year-old victim’s account in a sheriff’s incident report.

However, the suspect told authorities that his cousin accidentally shot himself by dropping a hunting rifle while cleaning it. His cousin then confirmed the account in a brief statement before being rushed to the hospital for a life-saving surgery.

But Major J.W. Chapman of the sheriff’s office said that Langdale’s statements was not in line with the evidence. “We knew from the beginning that something wasn’t right,” he was quoted in the report. “The more we looked into it, the more it seemed odd.”

When the victim finally woke up at the hospital, he told authorities that Langdale shot him on purpose over the potato chips. The victim said he never ate the chips.

Investigators also found that Langdale switched the rifle he used in shooting his cousin with another one as a cover-up.
