MANILA -- Smart Communications said Thursday it was ending support for multimedia messaging or MMS on Sept. 28, as it prepares to deploy 5G services.
An "ageing technology," MMS has been overtaken by apps that allow users to exchange photos, video and messages for free, PLDT Inc's mobile unit said in an e-mail advisory.
"On September 28, 2018, MMS will no longer be supported by the Smart network," Smart said. It will cover Smart, Talk 'N Text and Sun Cellular subscribers.
"As we bid goodbye to MMS after a colorful 20-year ride, we are now preparing the Smart network to offer the latest communications technologies such as 5G and more very soon," it said.
Smart began offering MMS in 1999, just as smartphone use exploded in the Philippines.
