PBA: More cohesive, grittier Alaska unit ready to challenge San Miguel

For those expecting the PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals between San Miguel Beer and Alaska to be a remake of their 2016 Philippine Cup finals showdown, hold that thought for a minute.

The Beermen won that round, but San Miguel coach Leo Austria said it won’t be the same this coming best-of-5 series, which begin at Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday.

Austria said the Aces will be fielding a more solid team this time because they maintained their core.

"A lot of their players have been together for the last three seasons. Naroon na 'yun cohesiveness, 'yung kanilang jelling and camaraderie," he said in an article posted on the PBA website.

Among his biggest concerns are returning import Diamon Simpson and player of the conference candidate Vic Manuel.

"Simpson inspired his teammates not because of his offense but because he is the glue guy of the team. Siya 'yung nagdidikit dikit sa mga players that's why they are playing well. They are a dangerous team lalo na ang ganda ng nilalaro ni Manuel," Austria said.
