MANILA, Philippines -- To decongest traffic this Yuletide season, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Thursday began its implementation of the “zipper lane” traffic scheme along a portion of Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) in Mandaluyong City.

According to MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino, the “zipper lane” or traffic counter-flow starts from the inner northbound lane from SM Megamall up to Pioneer Street, along EDSA.

Tolentino, who has personally manned the traffic in the area, said the zipper lane hopes to ease the traffic congestion of vehicles from Ortigas Avenue going to Makati during the morning.

Upon reaching EDSA-SM Megamall, vehicles will enter the northbound lane and will counter-flow until they reach the zipper lane exit at EDSA-Pioneer.

He said that allowing the counter-flowing of vehicles might help ease the heavy traffic along EDSA especially during rush hours.

The "zipper lane" will be opened from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. until December 23, except weekends.

Based on MMDA figures, at least 1,200 vehicles ply along EDSA per lane, per hour.
