On Saturday, Los Angeles Lakers star Pau Gasol pledged to donate $1,000 for every point he scores against the Golden State Warriors to relief efforts for those affected by super typhoon “Yolanda” in the Philippines.
The Spanish big man finished with 24 points, putting his donation at $24,000 to be coursed through UNICEF, where he serves as an ambassador.
The charitable act inspired Meralco Bolts guard Mike Cortez to put up a similar effort.
Cortez averaged 9.3 points per game last season, and has scored a total of 18 points in his first two games this conference. The Bolts have 12 more games remaining in the elimination round of the Philippine Cup and could play more matches if they make it to the playoffs.
