MANILA, Philippines – It was with a heavy heart that Mary Joy Tabal competed in the finals of the 41st National MILO Marathon on Sunday morning in Cebu City.
Tabal, a gold medalist in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games, defended her title as the MILO Marathon Queen even as she grieved the loss of her father, who died the night before the race.
She crossed the finish line with a time of 2:58:01, way ahead of second placer Christabel Martes, who followed with a time of 3:04:20. Jho-An Villarma was third with a time of 3:11:26.
Still, Tabal's coach, Philip Dueñas, noted that it was a slow finish for the SEA Games gold medalist as the runner was not 100% emotionally.
In the men's division, Joerge Andrade was crowned the new Milo Marathon King after finishing with a time of 2:39:34.
This marks the first time that the national finals of the MILO Marathon was held in Cebu City. – With a report from Leleth Ann Rumaguera, ABS-CBN News.
