This year, Google celebrated the country’s Independence Day with a brilliant illustration by Pinoy artist Dan Matutina.
Matutina’s work is marked by bright and out-of-the-box illustrations. The graphic designer’s creations have served a string of local and international clients.
His art now stands with past Philippine Independence Day Doodles since 2009.
Unlike past illustrations, Matutina chose to forego the explicit showcasing of the Google logo and instead featured a stunning sunrise over the sea with Filipinos paying respect to the Philippine flag.
Placement of key figures in the background, such as the biggest island on the left, and how the view of the flagpole is set between two smaller islands at the right, do render an abstract take on the Google logo.
Google shared a description of the Doodle: “With more than 7,000 islands that make up the country, there is no shortage of opportunities to watch the sun rise over the water. The sunrise imagery in the Doodle is meant to capture Filipinos’ optimism in the face of adversity.
In the foreground of today’s Doodle, a group of people gather for a traditional flag-raising ceremony. Accompanied by the Philippine national anthem, these ceremonies are held daily at schools and weekly in government institutions.”
