TAIPEI — The Gilas Pilipinas coaching staff saw up close the Iraq team that they’re facing in the FIBA Asia Cup in Lebanon next month.
Coach Chot Reyes just become more convinced there won’t by any pushover in their grouping with China, Qatar and Iraq.
"They’re all tough,” said Reyes. “We saw here that Iraq is tough with their good naturalized player in DeMario Mayfield.”
The 6-foot-6 combo player piled up 19 points, five rebounds, two steals and one assist against two errors to lead the Iraqis to an 86-68 rout of India.
The Iraqis had made good impression in their fourth-place finish in the FIBA Asia Challenge last year. They could only be more better with the entry of Mayfield.
The Carnesville, Georgia native is a scoring machine for his Al Nift Baghdad team in the Iraq league, averaging 29 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in their most recent tourney.
Gilas must make the Top Three in its group in the FIBA Asia Cup to advance to the next round.
